Sunset Sessions: Creating the Most of Golden and Glowing Hour

A short guide to golden hour photography: what it is, and how to plan a session around it.

Every day the sun sets and gives us some of the most beautiful natural light of the day. For photography, that window is worth planning around, and it is often the difference between a good session and a genuinely stunning one.

What is golden hour?

For photographers, golden hour refers to the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise. The light is soft, warm and low in the sky, which is flattering for portraits and dramatic for landscapes alike.

Planning your session

Check the exact sunset time for the day of your shoot so you don't lose any of the light, and keep an eye on the forecast in the days beforehand. Choose a location where you can see the horizon clearly: Perth's beaches, riverside spots and open parkland all work beautifully. And let the mood of the moment guide the shoot, golden hour sessions tend to feel relaxed and unhurried by nature.
